Hayward is a city located in Alameda County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 140,030. The suburbs of Mt. Eden and Schafer Park have been incorporated into Hayward.
Hayward is served by three high schools, Mt. Eden High School, Tennyson High School, and Hayward High School. It is an important commercial and distribution center for farm products. Manufactures include wire, plastics, metal and paper products, textiles, machinery, and motor vehicles. Hayward grew with the development of the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970s and 80s. It is the seat of California State Univ. Hayward, and is the eastern terminus of the San Mateo bridge across San Francisco Bay.

Hayward, California is a thriving metropolis that boasts a huge variety of recreational and cultural attractions. These attractions include art groups, art enrichment opportunities, parks, swim centers, tennis courts, performance theaters, a rodeo arena, a nature center, a hiking trail and a professionally rate 18-hole golf course (acclaimed as "one of the best municipal golf courses in the East Bay"). Hayward was founded in 1852 and has a temperate climate, and traits that have spurred it's growth during the 1960's. Parking in the downtown of Hayward is free, which provides for fantastic nights of visiting retail shops, high-scale and moderate restaurants, and experiencing the culture of the fine arts. Some more of these recreational opportunities include the Japanese Gardens, the nature center, and beautiful regional parks. The two most significant parks of Hayward, the Garin and Dry creek are adjacent to each other and cover more than 3000 acres. These parks make for fantastic hiking, picnicking and fishing. Finally, in regard to it's economy, Hayward is thriving. Hayward is always working to expand the tax base, create jobs, provide needed products and services, and in general improving the quality of life for Hayward residents. It's strong economy and strong cultural activities make the large city of Hayward an attractive place to live. Hayward is the home to various parks, art gropus, swim centers, tennis courts, an arts center, performance theaters, and a famous 18 hole gold course.
